HOW TO GET INVOLVED

LIPC is the Citizen Action of New York (CANY) affiliate on Long Island.

 

The Long Island Progressive Coalition (LIPC) is a grassroots community-based organization founded in 1979, dedicated to promoting sustainable development, revitalizing local communities, enhancing human dignity, creating effective democracy, and achieving economic, social & racial justice.

 

 

The Accomplishments of This School of Fish

The changes that LIPC has successfully made to date are proof that collectively, we can make positive differences in our community.

 

 
2009 | Successfully lobbied for the passage of statewide
legislation called The New N.Y. Government Reorganization and Citizen Empowerment Act that empowers citizens to consolidate, streamline or reform Special Taxing Districts.

 

 
2008 | Led successful campaign to ensure voter integrity by choosing optical scanners for new voting booths in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

 

 
2007 | Working with Citizen Action of New York, we won a new state aid formula for education which gives poor students a sound quality education.

 

 
2006 | Campaigned successfully to stop the Suffolk County Yaphank Jail from becoming a “Super Jail.”

 

 

 
2005 | Helped pass a strong living wage bill in
Nassau County.

 

 

 
2004 | Helped pass a $3 million affordable housing fund in East Hampton.

 

 

 
2002 | Ran a successful campaign called Rethink LITP 2000 which succeeded in stopping the New York State Department of Transportation’s plan to widen roads throughout Long Island.

 

 
1996 | Released “Long Island 2020: A Greenprint for a Sustainable Long Island,” a groundbreaking report that spearheaded the sustainability movement on Long Island.

 

 
Early 90s | Helped to initiate, organize, and lead a successful national campaign that expanded unemployment benefits from 26 to 39 weeks.

 

 
"Campaign to Save Route 25A" | LIPC created the “Campaign to Save Route 25A” that stopped further road widening on Route 25A and led to the creation of the North Shore Heritage Commission.

 

 
Local Chapter Successes | Expansion of accessory apartment legislation in Southampton.
Adoption of a human rights defense resolution in Huntington. Preservation of a historic log cabin in Hempstead.
