Clean Money, Clean Elections
Clean Election Reform legislation establishes a system under which candidates in New York who agree to limit campaign spending and contributions and who collect a set amount of small contributions from voters, will receive a fixed and equal amount of public funding for their political campaigns.
Problem:
• The large amount of money needed to run a competitive campaign
• Large spending limits for soft money in New York State
• Big money interests have too great an influence in our elections
• Lobbyists often influence policy making
• We the people are not truly represented by our government
Solutions:
• Limits campaign spending
• Limits campaign contributions
• Provides a fixed and equal amount of public funding to qualified candidates
• Bans soft money
• Encourages candidate debates
• Better disclosure of contributors to campaigns
• Beefs up enforcement of New York Board of Elections
• Gives regular people a fair shot at winning office
• Levels the playing field
• Restores the principle of one person one vote
• More diverse views are brought forth
• Candidates have more time to speak to their constituents and not have to raise big dollars
• Clean Money Candidates not beholden to special interests
