Long Island is on the front-line of climate change and environmental degradation. Our coastal communities are threatened by sea-level rise; toxic dumps and landfills pervade our low-income communities; families are still recovering from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy; and our neighborhoods are overburdened with air pollution, causing cancers and heart disease.
With the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we know that we have a small window of time to take bold action to stem the crisis. With our federal administration committed to rolling back needed protections, real action must come from local communities and state representatives.
Fortunately for Long Island, we have environmental leaders and climate champions in the NYS Assembly pushing for both local solutions as well as transformative policy changes statewide like the Climate and Community Protection Act, which would move NYS to 100% renewable energy, invest in communities most impacted by environmental degradation, and create tens of thousands of family-supporting jobs in the green economy.
Join Assembly Members Phil Ramos, Kimberly Jean-Pierre, Michaelle Solages, and Steve Englebright on Thursday, October 25th at the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood from 630pm-800pm to hear from these leaders about their efforts to address environmental injustice and the impacts of climate change in their communities. They will speak about local issues, uplift statewide solutions, and hear from community members about their concerns.
