Vision Long Island Honors LIPC Founder David Sprintzen with Smart Growth Award

On Friday, June 15th VISION Long Island hosted the 2007 Smart Growth Awards at the Cresthollow Country Club in Woodbury. This year’s theme was “Transforming Long Island”. Long Island Progressive Coalition founder David Sprintzen was recognized as a sustainability pioneer. Sprintzen deferred the award as a tribute to the LIPC’s work. Several staff and board members attended the luncheon. Bill Chaleff, a co-chair of the South Fork Progressive Coalition, was also honored for his ability to foster clean energy and green building development with his company Chaleff & Rogers. Chaleff has designed over 300 energy-efficient buildings since he began his practice on Long Island in 1974.

Touting achievements in housing, transportation, and sustainable development, the conference recognized the notion of creating smart growth communities. VISION presented the results of a recent poll conducted by SUNY Stony Brook, which found that 43% of Long Islanders would prefer to live in mixed-use areas in which residents could walk to stores, schools, and services.
