RACHEL
Guest Speaker via Skype from Paris: Filmmaker SIMONE BITTON
A powerful portrait of the life and death of peace activist Rachel Corrie, who was crushed by an Israeli army bulldozer in the Gaza Strip in 2003
“Simone Bitton’s subtle and nuanced movie presents two narratives: one offered by the State of Israel and the other by the International Solidarity Movement activists and the Palestinian eyewitnesses who were with Rachel on that tragic day.” –Neve Gordon, The Nation (Prof. of Politics & Government, Ben-Gurion Univ.)
RACHEL is a startlingly rigorous, fascinating and deeply moving investigatory documentary that examines the death of peace activist and International Solidarity Movement (ISM) member Rachel Corrie, who was crushed by an Israeli army bulldozer in the Gaza Strip in 2003 while non-violently protesting the demolition of Palestinian homes in Rafah. A few weeks after her little-reported death, an inquiry by Israeli military police concluded that Corrie died in an accident. Now her parents, sister and brother are suing the state of Israel claiming wrongful death. The suit’s objective according to Rachel’s mother “is to illustrate the need for accountability for thousands of lives lost or indelibly injured by Israel’s occupation.” France/Belgium, 2009, 100 min.; In English, Arabic, and Hebrew with English subtitles Writer/Director: Simone Bitton.
